Encryption has always been around, mostly optional. Lately it has become not only more common, but quite frequently it is default. This means that, in principal, nobody else, including the NSA, can see what is going on.

What is been discussed now is that you (the user) might encrypt, but only with a backdoor available to government agencies. Which in essence means, everyone can get access and encryption would become useless!
